The short version

Apple just announced HomeView, a $299 gadget with a 7-inch screen that sits on your counter like a picture frame. It has a new, chattier Siri. Family can keep a shared photo album filled, it recognizes up to six people, and it listens for your smoke alarm. You need a compatible iPhone or iPad to set it up. It arrives November 13.

A picture frame that talks

Picture the photo frame on your kitchen counter. Now imagine it can also play music, answer questions, show who’s at the front door, and chat with you.

That’s the idea behind Apple’s newest gadget.

On October 13, Apple announced HomeView. It’s a $299 screen with a 7-inch display. The screen sits on a round, dome-shaped speaker base, and it tilts so you can see it easily.

There’s also a version that hangs on the wall. It’s $299 too, but the wall mounts are sold separately, starting at $59.95.

HomeView starts arriving November 13.

The AI part

HomeView comes with Siri AI. Apple calls it an entirely new version of Siri.

Apple says it is far more capable and conversational than the old Siri. Anyone in the home can ask it about virtually any topic, Apple says.

Apple says you can go back and forth with this AI helper in a conversation “like never before.”

The fun stuff it can do

It’s a living photo album. Pick a shared photo album, and HomeView becomes a picture frame that family and friends near and far can help fill. Picture a grandchild adding a photo from across the country, and it showing up on your counter.

It knows who’s looking. HomeView can recognize up to six people by their faces. Each person gets their own home screen.

It keeps your private stuff private. Apple says your personal things, like your messages and calendar, only show up when HomeView recognizes your face and your paired iPhone or iPad is nearby and was recently unlocked.

It watches the door. One screen can show up to nine security cameras at once.

It listens for trouble. HomeView listens for the sound of a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm and sends an alert to your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

Snoopy lives there. A Snoopy screen shows animations that change with the time of day, the weather, sporting events and holidays.

Before you order one

  • You need an iPhone or iPad. Apple says setting up HomeView requires a compatible iPhone or iPad.
  • The AI is still in testing. Apple calls Siri AI on HomeView a “beta,” which means it’s an early version that’s still being worked on.
  • Some AI features have daily limits. Apple says some features have daily usage limits, and more access will be offered for a fee in the future.
  • Not in Europe yet. HomeView isn’t sold in the European Union, because Siri AI isn’t available there.
